Travel documents & insurance

Citizens of most EU countries do not require a visa for short stays in South Africa, including for tourism purposes. Upon arrival, you will receive a 90-day entry permit as long as your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates and has at least two blank pages for entry stamps.

We require all participants to have travel and medical insurance. Cancellation cover is advised.

Health and vaccinations

Nkomazi Private Game Reserve and Hluhluwe-iMfolozi National Park are both classified as low-risk malaria areas. However, visitors are generally advised to take precautions against mosquito bites, especially after the rainy season, which could leave standing water. April is at the end of the wet season, so while malaria risk remains low, it is still wise to use insect repellent and wear long sleeves during dusk.

Some vaccinations are recommended for travel to South Africa. Please consult with your medical professional.

Safety in South Arfrica

People in South Africa are generally friendly, welcoming, and polite, and and we have always felt comfortable during our multiple visits. However, as with any destination, it’s wise to remain vigilant. In both Nkomazi and Hluhluwe-iMfolozi, your safety will be a top priority for us and our guides, ensuring secure and enjoyable experiences throughout your stay.

As we will be travelling in a group with pre-arranged transport and stays in luxury lodges, we do not expect any difficulties with opportunistic crimes such as pickpocketing.

We will be staying in remote areas teeming with wildlife, so it is important to always follow our expert guides’ and lodges’ instructions. While on safari, remain seated in the vehicle unless allowed to get out by the guide.

Money & tipping

South Africa’s official currency is the South African Rand (ZAR). Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in urban areas, luxury lodges, and most tourist destinations, including Nkomazi and Hluhluwe-iMfolozi. ATMs are available in towns and airports, but it’s a good idea to carry some cash (in ZAR or US Dollars), especially for tips, local markets, or remote areas where card facilities may not be reliable.

During our phototour, accommodation, transport and meals & drinks are included as mentioned. Tips are not expected but much appreciated. In general, US$5-10 per person per day for the guide and US$5-10 per person per day for the lodge staff is suggested. The guide is paid his tip directly at the end of the last safari and the lodge usually has a tipping box for staff.

Souvenirs any other additional personal expenses can usually be paid with credit card (VISA and Mastercard most widely accepted).
